Our Privacy Commitment

Utter is designed with privacy as the foundation. Your tasks, thoughts, and voice stay on your iPhone. No personal information is collected, stored, accessed, or sold.

This isn't marketing — it's how Utter is architecturally designed.

What Data We Collect

None.

Utter collects zero personal data from you. All your to-do lists, brain dump thoughts, and settings are stored locally on your iPhone.

  • No user accounts or registration
  • No tasks or lists sent to any servers
  • No voice recordings sent to any servers
  • No usage analytics or tracking
  • No advertising identifiers
  • No location data
  • No contact information
  • No third-party SDKs

Utter has achieved Apple's "Data Not Collected" privacy label because Utter genuinely does not collect, transmit, or process any of your information.

Voice Processing — On-Device Only

Utter uses your iPhone's microphone and Apple's Speech framework to convert your voice into tasks. This is done entirely on your device — Utter is configured to require on-device recognition.

  • Voice audio is never recorded or saved
  • Voice audio is never sent to any server (Apple's or anyone else's)
  • Speech-to-text conversion happens locally, using Apple's on-device models
  • Your voice is never heard, seen, or received in any form

Utter is not AI-powered. Task categorisation uses simple rule-based keyword matching that runs entirely on your device.

Microphone and Speech Recognition Permissions

The first time you tap the orb or mic button, iOS will ask for permission to access:

Microphone

So Utter can hear your voice

Speech Recognition

So Utter can convert your voice to text on-device

You can revoke these permissions at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security. Utter will still work for typed input without these permissions.

Where Your Data Lives

All your Utter data is stored locally on your iPhone using Apple's secure storage:

  • Task titles, completion states, and categories (My List, Grocery)
  • Brain Dump thoughts and saved sessions
  • List snapshots / history
  • Settings (voice choice, sounds, transitions, etc.)
  • Trial start date and purchase status

Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly share it using the iOS share sheet or enable iCloud backup.

Optional iCloud Backup

Utter supports optional iCloud backup through iOS. If you enable iCloud backup for Utter, your data will be stored in your personal iCloud account.

This is entirely optional — you control this in iOS Settings
Data is encrypted and stored in your Apple iCloud account
The developer cannot access your iCloud data
Only you can access this backup from your Apple devices
You can disable iCloud backup at any time

Subscriptions and Purchases

Utter offers three paid tiers after a 7-day free trial:

Monthly

£1.99

per month

Annual

£9.99

per year

Lifetime

£19.99

one-time

All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles the transaction, billing, and your payment information — payment details are never seen by the developer.

No Third-Party Services

Utter does not integrate with:

  • Analytics services (Google Analytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, etc.)
  • Advertising networks
  • Social media platforms
  • Cloud hosting services
  • Any third-party data processors
  • Any AI or large language model services

There are no third-party SDKs in Utter that could collect data.

Data Security

Device-level encryption

iOS encrypts all app data stored on your device

No transmission risk

Data never travels over the internet unless you export or share it

No server breach risk

There are no servers storing your data that could be breached

Your device security

Your iPhone's passcode/biometric protection secures access

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have rights including access, correction, deletion, and data portability.

Since you already have complete control of your data on your device, you can exercise these rights directly — open Utter to access or edit, remove items to delete, or use the share sheet to export. You don't need to contact anyone to exercise these rights.

Children's Privacy

Utter does not knowingly collect information from children under 13, because Utter does not collect information from anyone.

Changes to This Policy

This privacy policy may be updated to reflect changes in app functionality, legal requirements, or to add clarifications. The core commitment to not collecting your data will never change.

Updated policies will be posted at this URL. The "Effective Date" at the top shows when changes were made.

Regulatory Compliance

Utter complies with:

  • UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR)
  • Data Protection Act 2018
